Citronella oil can be incorporated into various products such as candles, incense sticks, soap, phenyl, and detergents to take advantage of its fragrance and potential insect-repelling properties. Here's how you can use it and the process for each product:
1.
Citronella Candles:Use: Citronella candles are popular for indoor and outdoor use due to their ability to repel insects.
Process: Melt candle wax in a double boiler or microwave-safe container.
Once melted, add citronella oil to the wax.
The recommended ratio is typically 1 ounce (30 ml) of citronella oil per pound (450 grams) of wax.
Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the oil is evenly distributed.
Pour the wax into candle molds, ensuring that the wick is centered.
Allow the candles to cool and harden before trimming the wick and using them.
2. Citronella Incense Sticks:
Use: Citronella incense sticks can be burned indoors or outdoors to help repel insects and create a pleasant aroma.
Process: Mix citronella oil with a base such as bamboo sticks or unscented incense cones.
Allow the base material to absorb the oil for a few hours or overnight.
Once the base is infused with the oil, allow it to dry completely before using the incense sticks.
3. Citronella Soap:
Use: Citronella soap can be used as a natural insect repellent while providing cleansing and refreshing benefits to the skin.
Process: Melt soap base in a double boiler or microwave-safe container.
Add citronella oil to the melted soap base, typically around 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of oil per pound (450 grams) of soap base.
Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the oil is evenly distributed.
Pour the mixture into soap molds and allow it to cool and harden. Once the soap has hardened, remove it from the molds and allow it to cure for a few weeks before use.
4. Citronella Phenyl:
Use: Citronella phenyl can be used as a floor cleaner with added insect-repelling properties.
Process: Mix citronella oil with water and a neutral pH floor cleaner in a ratio of around 1:10 (citronella oil to cleaner).
Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the oil is evenly dispersed.
Transfer the mixture to a spray bottle or mop bucket and use it to clean floors as usual.
5. Citronella Detergent:
Use: Citronella detergent can be used to wash clothes with added insect-repelling benefits.
Process: Mix citronella oil with liquid laundry detergent in a ratio of around 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of oil per gallon (3.8 liters) of detergent.
Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure the oil is well incorporated.
Use the citronella-infused detergent to wash clothes as usual.
When working with citronella oil, it's important to handle it with care and follow safety precautions. Additionally, always perform a patch test before using any new product to ensure compatibility with skin and fabrics.
